Senior Dog Care FAQs

Have questions about your pet’s care or what to expect during your visit? Check out our FAQs for quick answers on services, walk-ins, and more.

  • Why is my senior dog suddenly vocal at night?

Nighttime barking or whining may be a sign of doggie dementia, vision changes, or arthritic discomfort. Your vet will help you rule out medical causes. A calming routine in the evening may ease anxiety.

  • Should I be worried if my older pooch seems confused or “lost” at home?

Disorientation in familiar spaces can signal cognitive decline. Keeping furniture and feeding areas consistent is helpful. Ask your vet about supplements or strategies that will help with cognitive function.

  • Can an old dog learn new tricks?

Definitely! With positive reinforcement, older dogs can truly learn new things. Mental stimulation through puzzle toys and simple obedience refreshers will keep their minds sharp.

  • My senior dog is acting differently – could it be pain or something else?

If your older dog is avoiding stairs or seems withdrawn, don’t dismiss it as “just getting old.”  A wellness exam can uncover treatable causes like arthritis, dental issues, or organ function changes.

  • Is it healthy for my senior dog to sleep a lot?

Older dogs will require more sleep – often 16-18 hours per day. Sleeping a lot is healthy as long as they’re alert and happy when awake.  Any sudden changes in sleep patterns should be discussed with your vet.
